Highland Games Host Beef Shorthorn Show at Glenarm Castle
The Northern Ireland Beef Shorthorn Club committee are presently in the midst of preparing for the biggest event in their calendar. For the second year running the Club will hold a show of Beef Shorthorns during the World Highland Games which take place at Glenarm Castle over the July holidays. The show of Beef Shorthorn cattle will take place on the first day of the World Highland Games on Monday 14th July.
The Beef Shorthorn breed has strong links with Glenarm Castle as the Antrim Estates suckler herd uses only Beef Shorthorn bulls for the production of quality beef as well as ideal herd replacements. Using bulls from the distinguished Chapelton and Tofts herds in an organic system they are capitalising on the breed’s natural adaptability to thrive and perform to the highest standards in lower input systems.
Judging will be carried out by Mr James Playfair-Hannay from the renowned Tofts herd in Kelso, Scotland. Frank Milnes, Secretary of the Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society, will also be in attendance.
This is an occasion not to be missed either by those who appreciate the historical significance of the Beef Shorthorn breed or by those who have recognised its place in the future of sustainable quality beef production systems. This is evidenced in the selection of entries for the show with recent entrants to the world of Beef Shorthorn breeding coming forward to compete against some of the longest established local herds.
Entry forms are available from the NI Beef Shorthorn Club Breed Promotion Officer Kate Madden, Tel 028 28841684. Entries must be received by Monday 30th June at the latest.
