Marleycote Patricia 20 Prevails at Borderway UK Dairy Expo 2018

Judge Dean Malcolm, Victoria, Australia had no hesitation in tapping out Marleycote Patricia 20th as his Grand Champion. “She was an obvious winner today such a beautiful cow displaying quality throughout.”

Marleycote Patricia 20th VG86 stood first in the three year old class having calved her third at three years and nine months only six weeks ago. She is currently peaking at 49kgs daily with 4.45%F and 3.45%P having achieved 10,078kgs at 3.92%F and 3.23%P in her second lactation. Judge Dean Malcolm felt she was “easily top of the class with a tremendous bloom of udder, great width and height in the rear whilst the fore udder blended nicely into the body” making her best udder in the Dairy Shorthorn section. She drew the judges eye instantly with “fantastic bone quality, great cleanliness over the shoulders and stretch through the front end” as she paraded effortlessly around the ring. Her dam Marleycote Patricia 9th EX91 is currently milking in her eighth lactation and consistently produces over 10,000kgs and has achieved four milking diplomas. This is not the first time in the ring for Patricia 20 however this is her first major win having stood second at the Great Yorkshire show and Northumberland in 2017. This phenomenal cow keeps getting better and better with age.

Shaun Dixon continued his success with the Geri family as he secured the Reserve Championship with Shaunlea Geri 6 ET VG88 for the consecutive year. This Hylite Barbwire Red heifer in milk calved a heifer calf by Horizon Ranger Red last July. She perfectly matched the Champion with “a quality udder that improved as the day went on, showing off the tremendous width and height of the rear udder”. Geri's past showing success highlights what an outstanding cow she is. Standing second in the three year old class she had previously been undefeated in breed classes having won the Junior Championship here in 2015, Dairy Day Heifer Champion and Reserve Overall in 2016, Reserve Overall here in 2017 and Grand Champion at UK Dairy Day 2017. Back in calf to Marleycote Pirate and due in July she is projected to do 10,900kgs at 5%F and 3.4%P making her one impressive milking machine.

Honourable Mention went to Richard Baynes with Marleycote Princess Jill 38 by Kayl Outback. This VG87 third calver is another Marleycote cow that improves with age as she stood second in the heifer milk class two year ago year and first in the three year old class last year. She gave 9,248kgs in her second lactation with an impressive 4.89%F and 3.74%P. Tracing back to the famous Marleycote Princess Jill 31 EX95 she has six generations of VG and EX cows in her pedigree. Dean Malcolm comments she “was the most balanced cow in a difficult class, she walked on a great set of legs and feet with tremendous width in a very correct rump structure”. She calved a heifer back in October by Marleycote Hurricane and is back in calf to Lemon Grove Hoffman, due again in October after projected to achieve an incredible 11,400kgs with 5.15%F and 4.28%P.

Other class winners were IRG Collins and Partners with the heifer in milk Churchroyd Pamela 20 by Churchroyd King Willie. Currently giving 28kgs daily she calved her first mid November. This is the first time out for the promising young heifer that also took home best udder in the class. “An easy class winner today for the sheer quality in the udder and teat confirmation.” Her dam was Reserve Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show back in 2016.

The Junior Championship was won by Mossrigg Marcia 2 a January 2017 born calf from the Fisher family. This is the first outing for this young heifer and the Judge was instantly drawn to the “exceptional depth of rib and cleanliness throughout of this calf. Such femininity made her an easy winner today”.

Reserve Junior was won by Shaunlea Geri 10 ET, first in the in calf heifer class she comes from the prolific show family which stems from Strickley Geri 15th EX93 . She is one of four ET sisters, one being Shaunlea Geri 6 ET whom this calf seems on equal footing with as she too boasts a string of show successes including Junior Champion here last year. David Dent and Bekka Blenkharn took home the Honourable Mention title with Winbrook Pauline 33 a Winbrook Jagger daughter that stood second in the maiden heifer class. This March born calf “had a great rump structure and tracked well”, she is certainly one to keep an eye out for in the future.
