UK Dairy Day 2016 - Champion: Westonia Gay Lass 5

14th September 2015 | Judge: Michael Broadley

The Stockton-Morgan Partnership Proves Fruitful at UK Dairy Day 2016

Judge Michael Broadley of Whitecroft Pedigree Ayrshires shook the hand of Roger Stockton the proud breeder who led this years Dairy Shorthorn Champion Westonia Gay Lass 5th to victory. Commenting on his Breed Champion Michael states “the balance of this cow and her youthfulness edged her into the top spot in a Championship line up of some terrific breed examples”.

Westonia Gay Lass 5th owned by Roger Stockton and the Morgan family stood first in the senior cow in milk class having just calved her fourth at the beginning of June, a heifer calf by Rodway Bomber EX94. Classified VG89 as a second calver she is currently giving 37kgs daily. This is the first major outing for the Nejay Ernie daughter since her Reserve Championship win at the National Show in 2013. Gay Lass was the complete package for judge Michael Broadley as “she is such an extremely well balanced cow with great style and an eye-catching ring presence. She certainly looks like a cow that will be around for some time with a compact mammary that was high and wide in the rear on a great set of legs and feet.”

Securing the Reserve Champion rosette was Messrs' Fleetwoods' Hutchinwood Lido Sweetrose 23rd that stood first in the junior cow in milk class. “This is a tremendously powerful cow” that displays the hardwearing nature of the breed with an exemplary mammary system. Sired by Nixs LCD Lido and out of Hutchinwood Kian Sweetrose EX93 this junior cow is set to go far. Classified herself VG85 as a heifer she calved her second, a heifer by Lemon Grove Belagio in July. Currently giving 44kgs daily she has been served to Churchroyd Wildcard. Previous wins include Reserve Junior Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show 2015 and Champion and Reserve Interbreed Champion at Gargrave County Show 2016.

Rounding out the Championship was Shaunlea Geri 6th the first placed heifer in milk. The judge was astounded by “the udder quality in this young heifer” that calved at merely one year and eleven months old. “She has great style and a super mammary showing height and width in the rear with lovely venation in the fore and fantastic bloom”. This Hylite Barbwire Red daughter is certainly one with a bright future considering she is the sixth successional daughter of Strickley Geri 15th EX93 that has been shown and placed first or second. To date Geri 6th is still unbeaten in the show ring. Currently she is giving 35kgs daily and predicted to achieve 9,400kg.

Congratulations go to all the nine exhibitors who took part in what is becoming a dairy show not to miss.
