Champion: Churchroyd Peggy 19 from IRG Collins & Partners

Peggy Pulls a Hat Trick

Judge Tony Hayes, Llandovery Illawarra's, Victoria, Australia taps Churchroyd Peggy 19th out to retain her unbeaten track record in the show ring by winning the Championship title for the third time at the Great Yorkshire Show.  When commenting on his Champion from IRG Collins & Partners, Tony states that “she is almost faultless.”

Churchroyd Peggy 19th has recently been classified EX93 2E after calving into her fourth lactation back in January. This Nejay Prince 4th daughter, shown by Ian Collins headed a class of four intermediate cows and then went on to win the Production Inspection class. In her third lactation she produced over 10,000kgs in 305days with 3.90%BF and 3.30%P. Peggy is racking up the trophies as she boasts multiple Championship honours, two Reserve Interbreed wins as a heifer in milk plus two Supreme Interbreed titles in 2016. On commenting on his Champion Tony states that the “sheer capacity of this cow is phenomenal coupled with an exceptional udder she is an easy winner today”.

Reserve Champion: Churchroyd Heather 91 from IRG Collins & Partners

Reserve Champion: Churchroyd Heather 91 from IRG Collins & Partners

Reserve Champion was Churchroyd Heather 91st VG87 from the junior cow in milk class. This Churchroyd King Willie daughter calved a set of twins back in March and produced 5,059kgs with 4.14%BF and 3.86%P in her first lactation.  This is the first major win for the heifer who has been climbing the ranks in the show ring since her first outing as a calf.  Her dam Churchroyd Heather 61st EX91 has also had a successful show history which is unsurprising considering they come from the prolific Heather family of IRG Collins.  Grand dam Churchroyd Heather 17th EX91 is the matriarch who has bred numerous show winners and six excellent classified progeny.

Honourable Mention went to Marleycote Patricia 20th VG86 who stood second in the junior cow in milk class having calved her third at three years and nine months.  She is currently peaking at 49kgs daily with 4.45%F and 3.45%P having achieved 10,078kgs at 3.92%F and 3.23%P in her second lactation.  Judge Tony Hayes felt she was “a youthful junior cow that had a great bloom of udder and fantastic bone quality, parading on the best legs and feet in the class”.   Her dam Marleycote Patricia 9th EX91 is currently milking in her eighth lactation and consistently produces over 10,000kgs and has achieved four milking diplomas.  This is not the first time in the ring for Patricia 20th having won the breed Championship at UK Dairy Expo in March.  This phenomenal cow keeps getting better and better with age.

Junior Champion Honours went to Breckney Wild Eyes 8th  from the Harrison family.  This first placed heifer in milk is sired by Lemongrove Belagio was merely three weeks fresh on her debut outing at this years Yorkshire Show, and what an entrance onto the showing scene.  Tony Hayes comments that “she has a smoking udder which placed her top today”.  At first recording Wild Eyes is giving 30kgs daily with 4.03%BF and 3.46%P.  “This heifer paraded well and had width throughout, a wide and correct rump and beautiful width in the rear udder with a great fore udder attachment”.  The Harrison family see great things from this heifer that they have kept her Blackwood Park Butternut bull calf to rear.

Reserve Junior Champion fell to the second placed heifer in milk Churchroyd Lilian 25th VG86.  From IRG Collins & Partners this Treeton Pingerley daughter “has a promising future”.  Out of Churchroyd Lilian 17th EX92 a consistent 10,000kg cow her future certainly does look bright.

Mossrigg Marcia 2nd winner of the first split maiden heifer class was tapped out as Honourable Mention in the Junior Championship section.  A January 2017 born calf from the Fisher family this is the second major win having won the Junior Championship at Carlisle under Dean Malcolm.  Tony Hayes was instantly drawn to the “exceptional openness and depth of rib she stood out on parade, a handy class winner”.

Other class winners saw Breckney Goldie 22nd from the Harrison family top the younger split of the maiden heifer class.  Sired by Lemongrove Belagio, she “was super stylish and stood out as soon as she entered the ring”.  This is the first notably win for this promising heifer.  Shaunlea Geri 10th ET, topped the in calf heifer class. She comes from the prolific show family which stems from Strickley Geri 15th EX93.  She is one of four ET sisters, one being Shaunlea Geri 12th ET whom this calf pipped to the top of the class today. “This calf had to top the class for her sheer size and stretch, there was no way to escape her ring presence.”

The dry cow class had seven entries forward and Winbrook Peeress Rose 19th from David Dent beat out the fierce competition.  This “super dairy cow had the edge on parade and beautiful bone quality”. Rose is no stranger to the show ring either having won the breed Championship at Westmorland last year when she was fresh with her second.  By Llandovery Jinny's Empire she is due with her third at the end of August.   Only one cow was forward in the Senior cow class, Churchroyd Pamela 15th EX91 2E.  This Churchroyd Victor daughter calved her sixth at the beginning of June.  She has been a regular on the Collins show team over the years and has previously won the Reserve Championship here in 2016 and Reserve Champion at Stafford in 2014.

Continuing the days success the Collins' family stood at the top of the pairs class with Churchroyd Heather 91st and Churchroyd Gentle 105th daughters of Churchroyd King Willie EX92.  And then they won the group of three with the mature milking group of Churchroyd Peggy 19th, Churchroyd Pamela 15th and Churchroyd Heather 91st.

Day two boasts the Interbreed classes and this year was yet another success for the Dairy Shorthorns.  Under the scrutiny of Interbreed Judge Gilmore Lawrie, Richard Baynes was victorious in a strong class of six exhibitor bred pairs.  His winning pair consisted of Marleycote Patricia 20th and Marleycote Julia 6th.  Julia 6th VG87 was the third placed heifer in milk on day one but this Marleycote Cosmonaut daughter teamed with her stall mate proved the unbeatable perfect match for the judge.  When commentating on his winning pair Gilmore Lawrie said “they match in style and quality of udder they are so well balanced and easily stand top today”.   Marleycote Julia is the fourth generation of VG or EX cows in this high production family and she is certainly set to make her own mark upon the show ring.

On the other side of the show rings Vicky Harrison was also celebrating Interbreed success in the handling classes.  Huge congratulations for a very deserved victory in some very competitive classes.  All the young handlers did the breed proud from helping prepare the cattle to showing them off in style.  Well done one and all.   The Great Yorkshire Show never fails to impress with the quality and number of cattle on show and is definitely one of the highly anticipated shows in the dairy calendar.  Thanks must go to all the exhibitors as each and every single one of you make this happen year in and year out. Congratulations
